I'm Ellice Wu, an art historian based in Singapore. I received my PhD in Art History from NTU Singapore. Finding art in the everyday, whether that’s in a great art exhibition or a gorgeous cityscape, Wording Art is a space to put pen to paper on images that I see and love.

On this International Self-Portrait Day (Nov 1st), it was true serendipity that my podcast episode on High Impact Thesis (love the name!) by NTU World of Wisdom was released! 🎙
In this episode, I talk about my PhD research on ✨ Angelica Kauffman's London Self-Portraits. ✨
The conversation also touched on:

I saw pictures of @kowfong designed lanterns at @g

I saw pictures of @kowfong designed lanterns at @gardensbythebay for the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations and couldn't resist popping by yesterday to see them for myself! 🌕 I'm super glad I went (along with the crowds), and the lantern displays are so cute, fun, nostalgic, and happily showcase our Singaporean heritage! 🏮 My favourite is the duck character holding an ice gem lantern and with its noodle shop!
Also stayed for the light and music show at Supertree Grove 🌳 and it's just magical every time. 🎶 Bonus was also spotting the many octopus balloons (last pic) which are soo cute! 🥰

New blog post up on Wording Art about the exhibition Impressions of Monet at @gardensbythebay! We waited to visit on my birthday, and it was the best birthday experience I could have asked for! 🩷 #Monet artworks, beautiful flowers 🌺, water lilies, a replica of Monet's house at Giverny 🏡, and a fantastic immersive exhibit by @grande_experiences - this is possibly my favourite exhibition in Singapore in 2024 so far!

Convocation is done and dusted, and my family and

Convocation is done and dusted, and my family and I had the best time celebrating this huge milestone! I was so excited to receive my PhD gown and bonnet, and we took it out for a spin at my favourite photo spots in the NTU campus and in town at Gardens by the Bay! 🌷🌷🌻🌹💐🎈
As always, I am so grateful for my family, friends, the best supervisors, and all of the various people I've met at NTU and beyond who have brought me to this point. So thankful for the conversations, advice, commiserating, and just so many memories over the last few years of this incredible journey. 🦉 It's time for a new era! 🌟
P.S. I bought my Minnie Mouse graduation plushie at Hong Kong Disneyland last year, and had to add a PhD bonnet to complete her outfit - in pink! 🩷

I've spent the last few years researching Angelica

I've spent the last few years researching Angelica Kauffman and her London self-portraits. So when I heard that the @royalacademyarts was re-staging a solo exhibition of Kauffman's works (where the initial run was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic), I knew I had to make a visit to London happen! 🧳🇬🇧
It was a privilege to visit London again, and to also have my family view firsthand Kauffman's works which I've dedicated so much time to studying for so long! I had the best time seeing so many of Kauffman's paintings and self-portraits up close - and I thought the exhibition was just wonderful. 🖼️

Some snaps from 2024's edition of @ilightsingapore! I finally made my way over (only to the Marina Bay area) on Friday and it was nice to see so many people turning out for it! I'm also quite sure it's the first time I saw queues set up to interact with some of the popular exhibits...!
My faves were the giant inflated rocks which look pretty cool closeup, and the ring of mist!! 🤩✨

PhDone!!! 🎉 I had my oral exam last Friday and

PhDone!!! 🎉 I had my oral exam last Friday and I'm very delighted to share that I have passed without further changes! 💫
I've been trying to process the whole defence experience and everything else that went down over the last 4ish years, but it all still feels too surreal. 🥺
Certainly, this entire PhD journey has only been made all the better thanks to the many brilliant people I've met along the way! I'm so thankful for my friends, family, professors, and supervisors — for all of your support and encouragement, thank you!!! 💖
