Art Basel Hong Kong 2016 | The New and the Curious

My review for Art Basel Hong Kong 2016 is finally here!!! I realize it’s a little long after the event held over the Easter weekend from March 24th-26th. March was pretty much a crazy month for me going to the various art fairs, events, exhibitions with different starting and ending dates, while keeping up with schoolwork. It’s summer holidays now, so I finally got round to working on this!

This is the first part of my review of the fair, featuring contemporary artworks by many artists who seem to be new faces at Art Basel Hong Kong. I think a lot of the galleries who showed this year were first-timers at the fair as well, which would explain the fresh selection of artists.

The second part of my review features the works of old and famous modern masters (and a little contemporary), which you can read here!

    Art-dieu to Sai Ying Pun

Sai Ying Pun was the first Hong Kong neighborhood I lived in since moving here, and I moved away recently after two-and-a-half years there. I still go back often because of school, but it feels bittersweet leaving a place I’ve come to know and love. It was the setting for my induction to Hong Kong life, learning to walk around the city all the time, navigating the sloping and uneven pavements, exploring places to eat, and getting to know the friendly locals at the places I go to eat at all the time.

On a public holiday a while back, I was lazy to beat the crowds in town and decided to stay in nearby. While walking along, that was when I discovered the graffiti designs on a few shutters of the closed local shops nestled along First, Second and Third Street. Sai Ying Pun is great for its quiet peacefulness and its local feel (although it’s increasingly getting gentrified), but it’s not exactly visually appealing. I love how the graffiti-ed shutters add a burst of color and fun to the streets, especially when shops are closed for the day.

After moving away, I wanted to do a tribute to the well-loved neighborhood, and what better way to share photos of the artsy shutters I discovered! Art-dieu, Sai Ying Pun.

    Vision Tunnels

Summer break is officially here!!! I’m so so happy to be done with my long semester, and I can get back to viewing art around Hong Kong. In the meantime, here’s a quick post on Vision Tunnels, an architectural installation showcasing artworks at LANDMARK Mall as part of the Be Inspired in Central events, that was held for a week or so till 4th April.

Four Decades of Chinese Contemporary Art | M+ Sigg Collection

After all the hubbub of art fairs and exhibitions in March and April, it has been an abrupt move to school work for weeks on end. (I talk about school work too much.) Funnily enough, after visiting the M+ Sigg Collection: Four Decades of Chinese Contemporary Art, I liked it so much I wrote an essay about it! And other things. After finishing the essay, it feels real good to share about it here!

    Art Central 2016

The March art fair season has recently concluded in Hong Kong, and it’s time to review what went down during those few days. This is Art Central’s second showing, as well as my second time visiting their specially constructed white marquee! This year’s edition ran from 23rd to 26th March, and I went on the first day. It was a coldish, somewhat rainy day, and there weren’t many people – though that was probably an off chance since the total visitor count increased by 2000 compared to Art Central’s first year.

Thank you Experimenta for the invitation, and letting me explore something new this year – film!
